The Chinese military is unwaveringly committed to world peace, stability, and progress, said Defense Minister Dong Jun on Thursday at the opening ceremony of the 12th Beijing Xiangshan Forum, which runs from Wednesday to Friday.
Under the theme "Upholding International Order and Promoting Peaceful Development," the forum brings together more than 1,800 official representatives, scholars, and observers from over 100 countries, regions, and international organizations.
Noting that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Dong said China's grand V-Day commemorations signify that justice, peace, and the people will prevail.
At this critical historical juncture, the Chinese military is ready to engage in open dialogue with all parties on global security matters and firmly defend historical justice, he said.
"The more we face the challenges of war and peace, and the trials of blood and fire, the more we need to remember history, uphold righteousness, and stick together in collaboration. The Chinese military is ready to cooperate with all parties to be a steadfast force for global peace, stability, and progress," he said.
Dong emphasized that over the past 80 years, the United Nations-centered international system has established universally recognized purposes and principles, laying the foundation for overall world peace.
The minister also spoke of the Taiwan question in his speech, stressing that Taiwan’s restoration to China is an integral part of the post-war order and its status as part of China is a historical and legal fact that is beyond any doubt.
"The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has always been an indestructible force for safeguarding national reunification. It will never allow any separatist attempt for 'Taiwan independence' to succeed, and it stands ready to thwart any external military interference at any time," he said.
The forum also held two plenary sessions and several parallel sessions on Thursday, in which attendees engaged in discussions on international and regional hot topics such as "Building a Just and Reasonable Global Security Governance System" and "Strategic Mutual Trust and Open Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region."
