The Hong Kong Jockey Club (the Club) presented HK$2.35 million in cheques to nine Hong Kong, China athletes at a dinner tonight (19 September) to celebrate their medal-winning exploits at the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.

The rewards fall under the Jockey Club Athlete Incentives Awards Scheme (JCAIAS). A cheque presentation ceremony cum celebration dinner was held at the Club’s Sha Tin Clubhouse and organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK), co-organised by the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) and sponsored by the Club.

Speaking at the dinner, the Club’s Executive Director, Corporate Affairs Raymond Tam praised the Hong Kong, China delegation for excelling at this year’s World University Games. He said the athletes gave their all during the Games to showcase Hong Kong’s spirit of resilience and determination, making its citizens proud and infusing society with positive energy. He stressed the Club would continue to advance sports development both in Hong Kong and nationally, including supporting the upcoming National Games and promoting sports participation in the community.

In all, more than 30 Hong Kong, China athletes attended the JCAIAS presentation ceremony. Nine medallists received cheques under JCAIAS.

On successfully defending her title in the women’s individual épée, fencer Hsieh Sin-yan said her World University Games experience had strengthened her commitment to the sport. “Every bout on this stage was both a challenge and a source of motivation, and every drop of sweat fuels my ambition. I’m grateful to The Hong Kong Jockey Club for providing incentives, which serve as meaningful recognition of the years of hard work we athletes put in. I will continue striving for excellence and giving my all in the lead-up to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”

Table tennis men’s doubles gold medallists Chan Ho-wah and Yiu Kwan-to expressed their pride in their achievement, “We are honoured to represent Hong Kong and to bring home the city’s first table tennis gold at the Games.” The pair credited their success to mutual trust and support throughout the competition along with guidance from their coaches and care of the medical team.“This medal is the result of collective effort,” they stated. “Special thanks to The Hong Kong Jockey Club for supporting the athletes. We will keep striving to win more medals for Hong Kong.”

The three-year JCAIAS launched by HKSI with Club support in 2023 to provide cash awards to Hong Kong, China athletes who excel at major sporting events. These include the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Asian Para Games, World University Games, National Games and National Games for Persons with Disabilities, and respective Winter Games. The Club has provided nearly HK$76 million in cash incentives since JCAIAS was launched.

Over the years, the Club has promoted sports at both the community and elite levels through various initiatives, enabling people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to enjoy sports. Funded by the Club in partnership with the Government, HKSI was established in 1982 (initially called Jubilee Sports Centre) as a training base for elite local athletes. In 2021, the Club pledged HK$150 million to match the HKSAR Government’s HK$150 million grant for the Sports Science and Research Funding Scheme.

The Club is a world-class sports organisation rooted in Hong Kong that has long supported the country’s major regional and international multi-sports events. As the sole Partner Sponsor of the 15th National Games, 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and 9th National Special Olympic Games for the Hong Kong Competition Region, the Club and its Charities Trust have jointly committed a total of HK$450 million in support. The Club also supports the Games in the Guangdong Competition Region, in the areas of official activities, volunteer services and promotional work, and provides high-quality technical support for the equestrian events. For these initiatives, the Club has committed RMB50 million.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club extends its warmest congratulations on the successful conclusion of this year’s LIV Golf Hong Kong today (8 Mar) at the Hong Kong Golf Club (HKGC) Fanling Golf Course. HKSAR Government Financial Secretary Paul Chan, HKSAR Government Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law, Club Executive Director of Corporate Affairs Raymond Tam and other guests attended the tournament, witnessing the trophy‑lift moment.

The four-day tournament attracted tens of thousands of spectators from Hong Kong and around the world. The Club is proud to have served as the Official Community Partner of this M-Mark event for the first time, working closely with the HKGC to empower local communities through golf.

The Club additionally supported the launch of the Jockey Club Community Golf Programme, which aims to enhance community participation in and awareness of golf and to promote the sport’s long-term development in Hong Kong.

The Programme will offer activities including school-based events, experiential courses and inter-school competitions, with complimentary tickets made available to people in underprivileged communities. In the lead-up to the golf tournament, elite international golfers visited a primary school to engage with students and inspire interest in the sport. Arrangements were also made for golf professionals from HKGC to mentor young players of differing abilities to promote inclusion. These initiatives aim to give young and underprivileged people opportunities to experience the excitement of golf both on and off the course.

The Club’s booth in the fan village added further colour to the event by offering attendees the chance to explore sports beyond golf. Members of the Club’s CARE@HKJC Volunteer Team also took part, creating balloon figures and bringing joy to spectators.

Visiting golfers were invited to experience the city’s cultural and culinary highlights including Tai Kwun in Central and Happy Wednesday races at Happy Valley Racecourse. These experiences helped to promote horse racing tourism and showcase Hong Kong’s diverse attractions to a global audience.

Through these activities and engagement opportunities, local residents had more opportunities to connect with golf, while top golfers and visitors from around the world experienced Hong Kong's unique character and its capability to host high-calibre major events. This, in turn, helped strengthen the Hong Kong brand and share positive stories about the city.

In 2024/25, the Club’s Charities Trust supported eight “M” Mark events as Official Community Partner. These included the Hong Kong Sevens, the Volleyball Nations League and the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships, reaching over 81,000 beneficiaries. These partnerships not only inspire the community’s enthusiasm for sport but support the HKSAR Government in strengthening Hong Kong’s status as a premier destination for outstanding sports competitions and major cultural events.

The Club’s support for these sports events, like all its charity and community donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and responsible sports wagering generate substantial tax contributions, charity support and employment opportunities for Hong Kong.
