The Hong Kong Jockey Club (the Club) presented HK$2.35 million in cheques to nine Hong Kong, China athletes at a dinner tonight (19 September) to celebrate their medal-winning exploits at the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.

The rewards fall under the Jockey Club Athlete Incentives Awards Scheme (JCAIAS). A cheque presentation ceremony cum celebration dinner was held at the Club’s Sha Tin Clubhouse and organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK), co-organised by the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) and sponsored by the Club.

Speaking at the dinner, the Club’s Executive Director, Corporate Affairs Raymond Tam praised the Hong Kong, China delegation for excelling at this year’s World University Games. He said the athletes gave their all during the Games to showcase Hong Kong’s spirit of resilience and determination, making its citizens proud and infusing society with positive energy. He stressed the Club would continue to advance sports development both in Hong Kong and nationally, including supporting the upcoming National Games and promoting sports participation in the community.

In all, more than 30 Hong Kong, China athletes attended the JCAIAS presentation ceremony. Nine medallists received cheques under JCAIAS.

On successfully defending her title in the women’s individual épée, fencer Hsieh Sin-yan said her World University Games experience had strengthened her commitment to the sport. “Every bout on this stage was both a challenge and a source of motivation, and every drop of sweat fuels my ambition. I’m grateful to The Hong Kong Jockey Club for providing incentives, which serve as meaningful recognition of the years of hard work we athletes put in. I will continue striving for excellence and giving my all in the lead-up to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”

Table tennis men’s doubles gold medallists Chan Ho-wah and Yiu Kwan-to expressed their pride in their achievement, “We are honoured to represent Hong Kong and to bring home the city’s first table tennis gold at the Games.” The pair credited their success to mutual trust and support throughout the competition along with guidance from their coaches and care of the medical team.“This medal is the result of collective effort,” they stated. “Special thanks to The Hong Kong Jockey Club for supporting the athletes. We will keep striving to win more medals for Hong Kong.”

The three-year JCAIAS launched by HKSI with Club support in 2023 to provide cash awards to Hong Kong, China athletes who excel at major sporting events. These include the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Asian Para Games, World University Games, National Games and National Games for Persons with Disabilities, and respective Winter Games. The Club has provided nearly HK$76 million in cash incentives since JCAIAS was launched.

Over the years, the Club has promoted sports at both the community and elite levels through various initiatives, enabling people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to enjoy sports. Funded by the Club in partnership with the Government, HKSI was established in 1982 (initially called Jubilee Sports Centre) as a training base for elite local athletes. In 2021, the Club pledged HK$150 million to match the HKSAR Government’s HK$150 million grant for the Sports Science and Research Funding Scheme.

The Club is a world-class sports organisation rooted in Hong Kong that has long supported the country’s major regional and international multi-sports events. As the sole Partner Sponsor of the 15th National Games, 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and 9th National Special Olympic Games for the Hong Kong Competition Region, the Club and its Charities Trust have jointly committed a total of HK$450 million in support. The Club also supports the Games in the Guangdong Competition Region, in the areas of official activities, volunteer services and promotional work, and provides high-quality technical support for the equestrian events. For these initiatives, the Club has committed RMB50 million.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (the Club), as the sole Partner Sponsor of the Hong Kong Competition Region of this year’s National Games, today (24 November) announced cash incentives to support HKSAR athletes competing in the upcoming 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities.

The flag presentation ceremony for the HKSAR delegation to the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games (NGD & NSOG) was held at Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre today. Attending guests included: HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee; Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Sun Shang-wu; HKSAR Government Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law; China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee President Jenny Fung; President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China Timothy Fok; and Deputy Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Lester Huang.

The upcoming NGD & NSOG will cover 46 sports, including the NGD & NSOG The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy Wheelchair Fencing Competition and the NGD & NSOG The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy Para Table Tennis (T11) Competition, which will be held in Hong Kong. To encourage HKSAR athletes, the Club will, for the first time, provide cash incentives under the Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme (JCAIAS) in all medal categories of the NGD, with individual and team gold medallists receiving HK$187,500 and HK$375,000 respectively (See table below for details).

Lester Huang expressed his wholehearted support for the city’s para athletes, encouraging them to follow the inspiring example of HKSAR athletes at the 15th National Games. “The Hong Kong team has written a new and glorious chapter in our city’s sporting history with a total of 19 medals, including nine golds, two silvers and eight bronzes. The Club has long promoted sport at community and elite levels, enabling people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to participate. We therefore wish every HKSAR athlete the very best of luck at the upcoming 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games.”

The three-year JCAIAS was launched in 2023. Under the scheme, the Club sponsors the Hong Kong Sports Institute to provide cash awards to Hong Kong, China athletes who excel in major sporting events. These include the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Asian Para Games, World University Games, National Games together with their respective Winter Games and the National Games for Persons with Disabilities.

In support of the National Games, the Club has committed over HK$500 million to the Hong Kong and Guangdong Competition Regions. In the Hong Kong Competition Region, it is supporting volunteer service programmes, territory-wide community and school promotional activities, as well as initiatives to help underprivileged groups and young people attend the events as spectators. Some 100 members from the Club’s Volunteer Team are helping out as Group Volunteers in the Hong Kong Competition Region.

In the Guangdong Competition Region, the Club is providing high-quality technical support for the equestrian events in Shenzhen, leveraging its extensive experience in organising horse sports competitions. To help ensure the equestrian events are conducted to a high standard, the Club is also deploying an expert team and loaning specialist equipment. Additionally, the Club will support the Guangdong Competition Region’s official activities, volunteer services and promotion work.
