President Xi Jinping and other leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the state presented flower baskets at the Monument to the People's Heroes at the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing on Tuesday morning, paying their tribute to fallen national heroes.
The tribute-paying ceremony was held to mark China's 12th Martyrs' Day, a day ahead of its National Day which falls on Oct. 1.
Xi, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, was joined by representatives from all walks of life.
Other senior leaders including Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi and Han Zheng also attended the ceremony.
The ceremony started at 10:00. All attendees sang the national anthem, followed by a moment of silence in tribute to the heroes who laid down their lives for the liberation of the Chinese people and the development of the People's Republic of China.
Nine large flower baskets, with ribbons that read "Eternal Glory to the People's Heroes," were placed in front of the Monument to the People's Heroes.
Xi and other leaders walked up to the foot of the monument, where he straightened the ribbons on the baskets before leading other officials in a walk around the monument to pay their respects.
