On the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Ronnie Lins, executive director of the Brazil-China Research and Business Center, discussed China's commitment to multilateralism, open cooperation, and technological advancement in an interview with China Media Group (CMG).
Lins, whose country Brazil holds the rotating presidency of BRICS this year, highlighted the significance of proposals made by China at the virtual BRICS Summit on September 8. At the summit, China advanced three key points: upholding multilateralism to defend international fairness and justice; persisting on openness and win-win outcomes to maintain the international economic order; and strengthening unity and cooperation to build synergy for shared development.
Lins said these Chinese proposals are of great significance for global governance.
"Multilateralism ensures that international decisions are made in a balanced way, includes not only the major powers but also developing countries. The defense of openness and the mutual beneficial cooperation enforces fair trade and economic integration, which are essential for stability in the global context marked by tension and protectionism. The emphasis on unity for the common development show that only through cooperation can you face challenges such as climate change, food security and technological transformation. The recent expansion of the BRICS is a concrete example of this spirit," he said.
He also commended China's remarkable progress in science and technology.
"China's achievements, its science and technology, remarkably represent milestones in its developed structure story. The country brings together more than half a million high-tech enterprises, which reflects the strength of an innovate ecosystem that combined public investments, entrepreneurial dynamics and social support," he said.
In recent years, China's innovation capabilities have steadily improved, solidifying its foundation as a science and technology powerhouse. In 2024, China's total research and development investment exceeded 3.6 trillion yuan (about 506 billion U.S. dollars), a 48-percent-increase from 2020. The country also ranks first in the world for the number of people working in science and technology research.
This progress is reflected in the Global Innovation Index 2025 report recently released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which shows China ranking the top 10 for the first time. The country has climbed 25 places since 2013, making it one of the fastest-rising economies in terms of innovation.
In Lins's view, China's technological advancements have not only significantly boosted its own international competitiveness and improved the quality of life for its people, but have also made important contributions to the economic transformation of developing countries worldwide.
"These advances enhance China's global competitiveness, accelerate the transition to high value-added economy, and improve the quality of life of its people. Areas such as artificial intelligence, next generation telecommunications, renewable energy and biotechnological are already shaped a more modern and sustainable society. And the impact goes beyond China's borders. By spreading green technology and reducing costs, China helps other countries, especially develop ones to advance in their own transformation. Thus, China's scientific and technological progress is not only a national achievement but also a valuable contribution to all humanity," he said.
