Chinese provinces launch joint initiative to protect migratory bird routes

Ten provinces and regions in China have jointly launched an initiative to protect the safety of bird migrations along their flyways.

Among the major north-south migration routes of migratory birds in China, the central route passes through 10 provinces and regions including northeast China's Jilin, east China's Jiangxi, south China's Guangdong and Guangxi.

One of the critical routes is the Suichuan Bird Migration Corridor in Jiangxi. Due to its unique geographical conditions, millions of migratory birds pass through the route every year.

The joint initiative aims to mobilize conservation efforts across all involved regions to ensure the safety and protection of these vital migratory pathways.

"This initiative is conducive to passing on the baton from one to another, enabling all provinces to form a united force, share information and protect the important migration routes of migratory birds," said Duan Yonggang, deputy director of Jilin Bureau of Forestry and Grassland.

As one of the countries with the richest bird diversity in the world, China is home to over 1,500 bird species, or 13 percent of the world's total, and over 800 of them are migratory. Four of the nine major migratory flyways globally pass through the country.

"Protecting migratory birds ensures they can successfully reach their southern destinations. We can also share timely information to support their protection at each stop," said Xie Liyu, an inspector at Jiangxi Forestry Bureau.

China has launched a three-year nationwide campaign to strengthen bird protection. The campaign primarily focuses on enhancing the conservation of birds and their habitats, combating illegal hunting, and promoting public awareness.

China's Shenzhou-23 crewed spaceship blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the country's northwest on Sunday, sending three astronauts to its orbiting space station.

The spaceship, atop a Long March-2F carrier rocket, lifted off from the launch site at 23:08 Beijing Time (15:08 GMT).

The crew members consist of mission commander Zhu Yangzhu, and fellow astronauts Zhang Zhiyuan and Lai Ka-ying, who is also the first astronaut from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

In another notable first, one of the crew members is set to undertake a year-long stay aboard the space station, double the usual duration of previous Shenzhou missions.

After entering orbit, the Shenzhou-23 spaceship will perform a fast automated rendezvous and docking with the radial port of the space station core module Tianhe, forming a combination of three modules and three spacecraft.

Shenzhou-23 marks the 40th flight of China's manned spaceflight program and the seventh manned flight mission since the Tiangong space station entered its application and development phase in late 2022.
