China's film industry is increasingly harnessing new commercial potential through dynamic cross-industry collaboration.
During the just-concluded eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday season, many cities across the country integrated films with the cultural tourism industry and related sectors, including dining, accommodation, and retail services, which cover many main services sectors, significantly boosting service consumption.
In Huzhou City of east China's Zhejiang Province, audiences can enjoy a variety of benefits such as discounts on tourist attraction tickets and exclusive dining offers simply by presenting their movie ticket stubs. This initiative spans 91 business areas, dining establishments, and seven cinemas across the city.
In addition, the city has launched multiple movie-themed travel routes that allowed visitors to relive scenes from popular films.
"After watching the movie, I can enjoy discounts on experiencing Pingtan (a traditional storytelling art from Jiangnan, or areas south of the Yangtze River, with my ticket stub. While exploring the ancient town, there are also discounts on local delicacies and souvenirs," said Wu Yuxin, a tourist.
"We have innovated the 'one movie ticket stub connects all-encompassing consumption' model, integrating resources from cinemas, tourist attractions, commercial districts, and various departments to further unleash the consumption potential of the 'movie plus'," said Wu Gaojie, full-time vice chairman of Nanxun District Federation of Literary and Art Circles.
In the current Chinese film market, profit is no longer solely reliant on movie ticket sales. Instead, it focuses on screen content as the core, extending value to various aspects beyond the viewing experience.
For example, the country is unlocking new commercial potential in domestic intellectual property (IP), as a booming box office during the holiday fuels record spin-off sales, brand partnerships, and cross-industry collaboration in the animated film sector.
