Xiaogang Village explores sustainable development path as forerunner of China's rural reform

A village in east China's Anhui Province has emerged as a shining example of China's rural reform, exploring a new path from relying on traditional farming to becoming a vibrant hub of modern agriculture and cultural tourism.

Xiaogang Village of Fengyang County, better known as the forerunner of China's rural reform, won the honor of "Best Tourism Villages" last November at a UN Tourism meeting held in Cartagena, Colombia.

To promote rural tourism, UN Tourism, a UN agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, launched the Best Tourism Villages project in 2021 to recognize villages across the world that are leading the way in nurturing rural areas and preserving landscapes, cultural diversity, local values and culinary traditions.

The village's innovative approach has not only boosted local incomes but also preserved its rich cultural heritage, setting a model for sustainable development across rural areas. As high-standard farmland spreads across the region and traditional farming transitions into eco-friendly, modern practices, the local agriculture has evolved beyond mere sustenance. Organic rice, green vegetables and specialty breeding now define the landscape, offering richer flavors and vibrant scenery.

"Now, we're not just growing grain. We also do pick-your-own activities and (chicken, duck and fish) adoption projects. City folks love coming here just to taste authentic farm-to-table dishes," said a villager.

"I could easily eat three bowls of rice with these dishes," said a tourist.

"The dishes here are perfect for our palate," said another tourist.

The charm of Xiaogang Village goes far beyond its farm produce. The village is also home to Fengyang Phoenix Painting, a traditional folk art dating back 600 years. Local artisans continue to preserve and pass down this delicate craft, turning ancient techniques into popular souvenirs for visitors.

"Our ancestors' treasured cultural heritage must be preserved. Phoenix Painting has a history of 600 years, and we should pass it on. Children coming here for educational trips love learning it. I personally teach them, and I feel proud to work here," said Zhang Bianhong, an inheritor of Fengyang Phoenix Painting.

In 2024, Xiaogang Village saw 620,000 tourist arrivals, generating a combined tourism revenue of 165 million yuan (about 23.17 million U.S. dollars).
