China hopes that all parties will take the ongoing Global Leaders' Meeting on Women as a new starting point to accelerate the all-round development of women, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Monday.

Lin made the remarks in response to a media query about the opening ceremony of the summit held on Monday morning in Beijing at which Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech.

"President Xi noted that at present, complex challenges still hamper the all-round development of women, and equality between men and women remains a lofty yet arduous task. President Xi called on all parties to rededicate to the purpose of the Beijing World Conference on Women, build greater consensus, broaden the paths forward and take more concrete actions to accelerate the new process of women's all-round development. He urged all parties to jointly foster an enabling environment for women's growth and development, cultivate powerful momentum for the high-quality development of women's cause and develop governance frameworks to protect women's rights and interests, so as to write a new chapter in promoting global cooperation on women," Lin said.

"President Xi pointed out that the cause of women has always been an integral part of the epic Chinese modernization endeavors, and China has actively provided opportunities and support for global women's cause through its development," Lin said.

"All parties spoke highly of President Xi's keynote speech and praised the four-point proposal put forward by President Xi as being in line with the trend of the times and contributing China's approach to advancing the global cause of women. They also lauded the five practical measures proposed by President Xi to support global women's development, which fully demonstrate China's sense of responsibility as a major country in the new era," he said.

"China hopes that all parties will take the summit as a new starting point, work together to carry forward the spirit of the Beijing World Conference on Women, make unremitting effort towards the goal of building a community with a share future for humanity, accelerate the new process of women's all-round development, and jointly create a better future for humanity," the spokesman added.
