The 12th Canton Tower Run Up contest kicked off on Saturday in Guangzhou City, south China's Guangdong Province, drawing 2,000 runners from 35 countries and regions.
Combining professional athletes and family participants, the event showcased the city's vitality and its growing enthusiasm for nationwide fitness ahead of the 15th National Games.
At the foot of the 600-meter-tall Canton Tower, the participants gathered in high spirits for the annual vertical marathon.
The annual race, a signature sports event of the city, features three routes. Saturday's competition included the "core tube" route, covering 112 floors, and the "sky ladder" route with 34 floors.
Among the participants was Max from Australia, who has lived in Guangzhou for eight years and often runs along the Pearl River.
"I think Guangzhou is a city of sports. Running by the riverside is wonderful. I would love to win a medal today," he said.
As the starting gun fired, runners sprinted upward toward the tower's observation deck. After an intense climb, Wei Yipang won the men's championship in 15 minutes and 7 seconds, while Yao Liping claimed the women's title in 19 minutes and 6 seconds.
"This is my fifth time joining the competition, I believe. It feels great -- the course is excellent. I did more than 16 minutes last year, so I would like to see if I've made progress this year," Wei said.
Chinese women's marathon record holder Sun Yingjie presented medals to every finisher, encouraging the public to embrace healthy lifestyles.
"In the past, I brought honor to the nation through competition. Now I'm here sending a message of health. With the 15th National Games approaching in Guangzhou, I hope events like this can inspire people to stay active and healthy," she said.
