The three major ports in Haikou, capital of south China's tropical island province of Hainan, have suspended operations starting Monday evening, as Typhoon Fengshen, the 24th typhoon of the year, was upgraded to a severe tropical storm late Monday.
The center of Typhoon Fengshen was located approximately 75 kilometers from the Yongxing Island of the Xisha Islands in Hainan's Sansha City in the South China Sea at 16:00 on Tuesday.
The typhoon is forecast to sweep the northwestern part of the Xisha Islands from Tuesday afternoon to evening, heading towards Vietnam's central coast before gradually weakening, according to the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Service.
"Heavy to torrential rains are forecast in the east half of the Hainan Island, with particularly severe downpours likely in some areas. And the western half of the Hainan Island is anticipating moderate to heavy rains, with torrential rains in some areas. The rainfall process will mainly start from Tuesday night, and last until Wednesday to Thursday. And the highest temperature in most areas would drop to between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius," said Jiang Xianling, chief forecaster of the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Service.
The Xinhai Port, the Xiuying Port, and the Railway South Port in Haikou have all suspended operations due to the typhoon, with services expected to resume around Thursday depending on weather conditions, according to Haikou's transport and port authorities.
Additionally, some train services to and from the Hainan Island have been canceled, and emergency response levels have been adjusted to enhance preparedness.
