Chinese farmers have begun planting winter wheat following a successful harvest season for the country's autumn grain, the mainstay of China's annual grain production.

Over 85 percent of autumn grain crops have been harvested in major producing regions in the northeast, southwest and northwest, while over 80 percent have been harvested in the Huang-Huai-Hai region that encompasses parts of the Yellow River, Huaihe River and Haihe River basins, and 75 percent of mid-season rice and late-season rice crops have been harvested in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Meanwhile, the autumn season is also the prime window for planting winter wheat.

More than 10 percent of winter wheat has been planted in China so far, with the northwest wheat region having sown over 70 percent of its winter wheat.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has sent seven working groups and sci-tech teams to the Huang-Huai-Hai region, aiming to promote the implementation of relevant policies and key farming techniques to ensure a timely and sufficient sowing process.

China has been in a rush to harvest autumn grain as it seeks to achieve another bumper harvest this year despite unfavorable weather conditions affecting some regions.

Autumn grain typically accounts for around three-quarters of the nation's annual grain output.

Government data showed that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China's food security has been further consolidated, with the country enjoying sufficient food supplies and stable food market operations.

The country's annual grain output has remained above 650 million tonnes over the past five years. In 2024, its grain output exceeded 700 million tonnes for the first time, and per capita grain possession reached 500 kilograms, higher than the internationally recognized food security line of 400 kilograms, the data showed.
