The Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress concluded its 18th session Tuesday in Beijing.

Zhao Leji, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the closing meeting.

At the closing meeting, lawmakers voted to adopt the revised Maritime Law, and the revised Organic Law of Urban Residents' Committees as well as decisions to revise the Cybersecurity Law, the Environmental Protection Tax Law, and the Organic Law of Villagers' Committees.

President Xi Jinping signed presidential orders to promulgate the laws and the decisions.

The session also adopted a decision to appoint Zhang Shengmin as a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China, and remove He Weidong from this position.

The lawmakers also voted to pass relevant international treaties and adopt a number of appointment and removal proposals.

Zhao delivered a speech after the session completed the voting process.   Zhao said that the session voted to designate Oct. 25 as the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration, and the country will hold commemorative activities in various forms. This decision reflects the common aspiration and collective will of all Chinese people, including the compatriots in Taiwan, and demonstrates the firm resolve to uphold the one-China principle and safeguard national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, Zhao said.

Following the closing meeting, the 14th NPC Standing Committee held its 19th themed lecture.

The 14th NPC Standing Committee also conducted a constitutional oath-taking ceremony on Tuesday afternoon.

The death toll in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip has risen to 71,441 since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on Oct 7, 2023, with the number of injuries reaching 171,329, said Gaza's health authorities on Thursday.
