Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang on Wednesday had separate meetings with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Chief of Staff of the Brazilian Presidency Rui Costa in Belem, Brazil during his visit to the country.

During the meeting with Lula, Ding, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, first conveyed Chinese President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings and best wishes to Lula, noting that under the strategic guidance of Xi and Lula, the building of a China-Brazil community with a shared future and the alignment of the two countries' development strategies have got off to a good start.

He said that China-Brazil cooperation has become a model for collaboration between major developing countries.

Noting that the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee has made top-level and strategic planning for China's future development, Ding said China is firmly committed to promoting high-quality development and higher-level opening up, which will create more opportunities for deepening practical cooperation between China and Brazil.

Ding expressed China's readiness to work with Brazil to strengthen political mutual trust, firmly support each other on issues concerning their respective core interests and major concerns, and jointly oppose unilateralism, protectionism and hegemonism.

China stands ready to expand practical cooperation across various fields and upgrade cooperation so as to achieve more landmark and exemplary outcomes, said Ding.

He called on the two sides to strengthen coordination and collaboration in multilateral arenas, advance the reform and improvement of global governance, and safeguard the interests of developing countries.

Ding called for enhanced cooperation on poverty reduction and implementation of the Global Development Initiative to deliver more benefits to the people of both countries and of the world at large.

He said China appreciates Brazil's efforts in hosting the Belem Climate Summit and advancing global climate governance, and stands ready to work with Brazil to ensure the success of the summit and inject new momentum into multilateral processes in the climate field.

For his part, Lula asked Ding to convey his sincere greetings to Xi, and expressed his gratitude to the Chinese president for sending a high-level delegation to attend the Belem Climate Summit and for China's strong support for Brazil in hosting the event.

Lula said since Brazil and China worked together to promote the building of a community with a shared future for a more just world and a more sustainable planet one year ago, the two countries have achieved tangible results in key and strategic areas of cooperation, and bilateral relations have reached a new level.

Noting that multilateralism is indispensable in today's world, Lula said that Brazil stands ready to maintain close communication and coordination with China to make positive contributions to the peaceful settlement of regional disputes.

During his meeting with Costa, Ding said China has always viewed and developed its relations with Brazil from a strategic and long-term perspective, and stands ready to work with the country to solidly advance the building of a China-Brazil community with a shared future and become reliable partners on each other's path to modernization.

Ding called on the two sides to enhance the alignment of their development strategies, advance cooperation in key areas in an efficient and practical manner, and better support the common development and revitalization of the two countries.

China prizes Brazil's leading position in the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and is willing to work with Brazil to promote greater development of China's relations with Mercosur and with CELAC, Ding said.

For his part, Costa said that the two peoples enjoy close ties and Brazilians regard China as a reliable partner.

Brazil is willing to work with China to follow through on the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, accelerate cooperation in key areas and enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges so as to lift the building of a Brazil-China community with a shared future to a new level, Costa said.

After the devastating fire at the housing complex Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the central government, Hong Kong authorities, and people from across China have joined forces in a massive outpouring of relief and support.

The blaze, the deadliest Hong Kong had witnessed for decades, broke out at around 14:50 on Nov 26 at the eight-towered residential estate Wang Fuk Court, which was under renovation, in Tai Po district. The fire quickly engulfed seven of the towers, leaving at least 159 dead, 79 injured and thousands of families homeless.

According to the latest official update, the Support Fund for Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, established by the HKSAR government, has received 3 billion Hong Kong dollars in external donations. Together with the HKSAR government's start-up capital of 300 million Hong Kong dollars, the fund stands at around 3.3 billion Hong Kong dollars in total. It will be used to help residents rebuild their homes and provide long-term support.

Following the fire, the HKSAR government has made comprehensive, multi-tiered rescue and resettlement efforts.

On the night of the blaze, the government promptly established temporary shelters at multiple locations across Tai Po district, coordinating accommodations in youth hostels, hotels, and transitional housing for affected residents. Emergency subsidies and living allowances were distributed to those impacted, while support was also provided through a "one household, one social worker" mechanism.

People from across Hong Kong have joined volunteer efforts, hoping to bring warmth to the wounded community, with donated supplies such as clothing, food, drinking water continuously arriving at temporary shelters.

Many taxi drivers have also volunteered to provide free rides.

"We work here from 08:00 in the morning to past 22:00 at night. We only leave when there are no passengers. That's how it is. It does affect earnings a bit. It definitely has an impact. But that's not important. The most important thing is to help others first," said Wong Chi-chuen, a taxi driver .

At the request of the HKSAR government, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council has coordinated the Ministry of Emergency Management to provide batches of supplies for the Tai Po fire relief effort, including portable outdoor charging stations, heavy-duty conveyors, blowers, respirators, goggles, protective suits, headlamps, and waterproof boots.

Mainland companies and residents, and various sectors in Macao also provided support following the devastating fire in Hong Kong, donating funds and supplies for emergency relief and post-disaster recovery.

"A large amount of supplies was collected and delivered to our disaster-stricken areas in a very short time. It made me realize what it means to be bound by blood. Because this kind of bond runs deep. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone," said Peter Lam, chairman of Tai Po Rural Committee.
