The U.S. government posted a record budget deficit of 284 billion U.S. dollars for October, the first month of fiscal year 2026, according to a Treasury Department report on Tuesday.
The deficit was 10 percent higher than the 257-billion-U.S.-dollar deficit posted in October 2024.
The report was delayed by the recent 43-day federal government shutdown, which disrupted certain payments, including government employees' salaries, a Treasury official said.
