Mainland slams Lai Ching-te authorities for selling out Taiwan

A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday warned Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities that their push for seeking secession by relying on external forces would inevitably end in getting burned.

The warning followed public furor in the Taiwan region, triggered by a U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission suggesting in its annual report that the Untied States could involve Taiwan in non-weapons support services to help upgrade American military bases in the Philippines. The proposal sparked outcry on the island, demanding Lai's government make explanation and disclose details of private talks with the United States.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Zhang Han, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, accused the Lai Ching-te authorities of bowing to outside powers for political gains and selling out Taiwan without limits.

Zhang warned that Taiwan, in the eyes of the United States, is merely a pawn to contain the mainland, a cash machine and a bargaining chip.

"The Lai Ching-te authorities bow and curry favor with external forces for political gains, pandering to the United States without principles and selling out Taiwan without limits. The United States always pursues 'America First' and only cares about American interests. Taiwan is a 'piece of fat meat,' a 'cash machine,' a pawn to contain the mainland and a tool to serve the U.S. interest, which is Taiwan's true value for the United States. A stern warning to the Lai authorities: colluding with external forces to provoke troubles and undermine regional peace and stability, persisting on the wrong path of seeking secession by relying on outsiders will inevitably end in playing with fire and getting burned," said Zhang.
