China has taken a major leap toward its ambitious goal of tapping energy resources in ever more distant seas, as the final turbine of the country's farthest-reaching offshore wind project was connected to the national grid on Monday, according to the State-owned China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC).

Located in the sea northeast of Yancheng City's Dafeng District in east China's Jiangsu Province, the wind farm comprises 98 wind turbine units, three offshore booster stations, and a maritime rescue platform.

Consisting of four separate sites -- the farthest situated 85.5 kilometers offshore -- the 800-megawatt Dafeng Offshore Wind Farm is currently the most remote offshore wind project in China to achieve full grid connection.

"The farthest point of the Three Gorges Dafeng project is over 80 kilometers from shore. The vast sea area presented significant construction challenges. Therefore, we independently developed a meteorological early-warning platform to more accurately predict and utilize every viable construction window. This experience provides valuable insight for future energy development in deeper marine environments," said Li Tao, executive general manager of China Three Gorges Corporation Jiangsu Branch.

After the full grid connection, the project is expected to generate over 2.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually -- enough to meet the daily power needs of 1.4 million households.

This will save approximately 860,000 tonnes of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 2.37 million tonnes each year, providing a steady and sustainable boost to energy security and green, low-carbon development in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday that Spain will present a proposal to the European Union (EU), calling on the 27-member bloc to break off its association agreement with Israel over the Middle East country's violations of international law in military operations, particularly those in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

At a campaign rally in the southern province of Huelva, Sanchez said a government that violates international law or the principles of the EU cannot be its partner.

Sanchez said that Spain would be formally requesting the termination of the Association Agreement during a meeting of the EU's 27 foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Tuesday.

The prime minister added that Spain is "a friend of Israel", but that it does not share the actions of its government, and urged other European countries to join the initiative.

At the campaign event, he also reiterated Spain's opposition to the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran, describing it as a major mistake.

Spain has in recent months adopted a more assertive stance on Middle East issues, calling for greater adherence to international law and multilateral principles in EU's external relations.

Earlier this month, Sanchez said that Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon are flagrant violations of international humanitarian law, urging the European Union to act decisively to prevent Lebanon from becoming "a new Gaza."

The Association Agreement has been in force since 2000 to provide the legal basis for the EU's trade relationship with Israel.
