China's retail sales of consumer goods went up 4 percent year on year in the first 11 months of 2025, totaling 45.61 trillion yuan (about 6.45 trillion U.S. dollars), showed the latest official data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing on Monday, NBS spokesman Fu Linghui said that the scale of China's market sales expanded further in November, with growth in service retail sales gaining momentum.
"In the first 11 months, the retail sales of consumer goods increased by 4 percent year on year. The growth rate was not only higher than that of the same period of last year, but also outdid the corresponding growth rate in the entire year of 2024. From January to November, service retail grew 5.4 percent year on year, with the growth rate going up 0.1 percentage point compared to the January-October period, marking three consecutive months of recovery and outpacing the growth rate of retail sales of goods," said Fu, who is also the chief economist of the NBS.
"Retail sales of cultural, sports, and leisure services maintained double-digit growth. From January to November, the online retail sales of physical goods increased by 5.7 percent year on year, with the growth rate 1.7 percentage points higher than that of the total retail sales of consumer goods, accounting for 25.9 percent of total retail sales of consumer goods. Digital consumption, green consumption, and health-oriented consumption are increasingly becoming new consumption hotspots, and their role in leading and supporting consumption is becoming increasingly prominent," he said.
According to the spokesman, China has implemented more proactive and effective macro policies so far this year, rolling out a series of measures to boost domestic demand, promote industrial upgrading, and stimulate economic activity, all of which have played an important role in supporting stable operation of the economy.
This has been reflected in rising consumption demand, particularly in the sales of home appliances and telecommunications equipment, driven by the country's consumer goods trade-in programs, Fu noted.
