China is closely following the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand and has engaged in active mediation for peace talks, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun at a press briefing in Beijing on Friday.
Guo was responding to a media query about the Chinese Foreign Ministry's special envoy for Asian affairs, who has started a shuttle-diplomacy trip to Cambodia and Thailand.
"As a close neighbor and friend of both Cambodia and Thailand, China is following closely the current situation of the Cambodia-Thailand border. China does not want to see the two countries engage in military conflict and is deeply saddened by the civilian casualties caused by the clashes. China has engaged in active mediation for peace talks to create the conditions and provide a platform for dialogue, in light of the wishes of the two countries concerned. On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held phone talks with Cambodian Foreign Minister and Thai Foreign Minister, respectively. He stressed that the Chinese Foreign Ministry's special envoy for Asian affairs has started a shuttle-diplomacy trip again for peace between the two sides, encouraging both sides to move in the same direction and stop the fighting as soon as possible and restore peace," he said.
