The world's first methanol dual-fuel powered smart ultra-large crude carrier, designed and built independently by China, was delivered on Monday in Dalian, a port city in Liaoning Province.

The delivery marks a significant step forward for China's shipbuilding industry in the realms of intelligence and sustainability, further solidifying its competitive edge in the global shipbuilding sector.

The giant vessel, known as Kai Tuo, is developed by the CSSC Dalian Shipbuilding Industrial Development Co., LTD., and measures 333 meters in length and 60 meters in width, with a loading capacity of 2.1 million barrels of crude oil.

Compared with conventional ultra-large crude carriers, this ship boasts superior navigability and port suitability.

It is equipped with domestically produced methanol dual-fuel engines and a methanol fuel supply system, meeting the latest international environmental emission standards.

"Our ship uses methanol fuels, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 92 percent and sulfur oxide emissions by as much as 99 percent compared with conventional fuels," said Li Jiming, project manager of the shipbuilder.

In addition to its environment-friendly designs, this crude carrier is outfitted with a domestically developed intelligent ship platform and multiple smart systems, allowing safe and efficient operational management in navigation and maintenance.

The vessel is scheduled to operate on routes from the Middle East to the Far East, according to the shipbuilder.

China has treated over 340,000 square km of land affected by water and soil erosion during the 14th five-year plan period (2021-2025), according to the Ministry of Water Resources.

The national efforts have rehabilitated about 116,000 square km of eroded lands, raising the national soil-water conservation rate to over 73 percent, the ministry said.

Soil-water conservation rate refers to the proportion of areas with good soil-water conditions to the total land area of a country. The latest figure reflects improved management of soil and water resources nationwide, marking a more harmonious co-existence between man and Nature.
