US defense policy bill seriously harms peace, stability across Taiwan Strait: Chinese spokesman

The U.S. defense bill has seriously undermined the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, a Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman said at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday.

The spokesman, senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, made the statement in response to the U.S. president's signing of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes several China-related provisions and allocates about one billion U.S. dollars for the so-called "Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative" to expand arms sales to China's Taiwan region.

"The negative Taiwan-related bill by the United States crudely interferes in China's internal affairs, sends a seriously wrong signal to Taiwan separatist forces, and severely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The United States has gone back on its own commitments, intensified arms sales to Taiwan, emboldened Taiwan secessionism, and accelerated the push of the Taiwan Strait toward a dangerous situation of military confrontation and conflict. The Democratic Progressive Party authorities disregard the lives and well-being of the people in Taiwan, allowing the United States to exploit them to the bone and squeeze Taiwan dry," said Zhang.

"Attempts to use Taiwan to contain China are destined to fail, and seeking secession through force will lead to self-destruction. We urge the United States to fully recognize the extreme sensitivity of the Taiwan question, earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the three China–U.S. joint communiques, handle Taiwan-related issues with the utmost caution, stop arming Taiwan in any form, and take concrete actions to safeguard the overall interests of relations between the two countries and two militaries," said Zhang.

China's 5G user penetration rate surged from 15 percent to 83.9 percent during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), an official from the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission said on Thursday.

Wen Ruisong, head of the Informatization Development Bureau under the office, said that over the past five years, China has accelerated the construction of intelligent and integrated information infrastructure, establishing the world's largest and most technologically advanced fiber-optic broadband and mobile communication network.

"During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China's 5G user penetration rate rose from 15 percent to 83.9 percent, gigabit broadband users increased from 6.4 million to 239 million, and mobile Internet of Things users expanded from 1.136 billion to 2.9 billion. This progress marks a clear acceleration in the shift from 'internet of everything' toward 'intelligent connection of everything," said Wen.

According to Wen, China's network infrastructure has been continuously enhanced, with the number of active IPv6 users growing from 462 million to 868 million over the five years.

Meanwhile, the quality and scale of China's computing infrastructure have also seen significant improvement.

China now operates 12.5 million standard racks in active computing power centers, with intelligent computing capacity reaching 1,053 EFLOPS, Wen said.
