The annual Shanghai-Taipei City Forum has promoted cooperation and exchanges on urban development, and shown vast opportunities for cooperation in aging populations and medical services, said scholars and practitioners from both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.
The event opened on Sunday in Shanghai, featuring discussions and experience-sharing in healthcare, transportation and other technology-driven sectors, according to the Shanghai Municipal Government.
Scholars said the existence of the officially recognized platform indicated that cross-Strait exchanges will be stable and long-lasting, and the two cities have much to learn from each other.
"Since 2010, spanning 15 sessions, the forum has become the only officially recognized and institutionalized platform for cross-Strait exchanges. The existence of such a platform directly demonstrates that cross-Strait exchanges will not be interrupted," said Sheng Jiuyuan, executive director of the center for Taiwan studies at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
"There is still a very broad space for exchange between Shanghai and Taipei. For example, both cities are facing the challenge of aging populations. How should we address this challenge? Shanghai and Taipei have conducted extensive explorations, sharing common experiences as well as unique ones. In the future, exchanges in this area can be further strengthened," said Li Mi, deputy director of the Shanghai Institute for Public Relations.
Young medial practitioners from Taiwan who chose to work in Shanghai also said that they value the advanced medical technologies and valuable opportunities in the municipality.
"Taipei is a relatively advanced city in the Taiwan region, while Shanghai is also a very advanced city in the Chinese mainland. Both cities are very familiar to me," said Han Yumei, a physician at Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital.
"After graduation, I chose to stay in Shanghai and join the department of radiation oncology at Ruijin Hospital. Currently, I work as a medical physicist, a role that may not be familiar to many. Essentially, we act as a bridge between physicians and medical equipment. As a young professional from Taiwan, developing my career in Shanghai, I deeply cherish the opportunity to learn and grow at a platform like Ruijin Hospital. I also hope to apply my skills and expertise to frontline work," said Chang Shu-Chun, a medical physicist at Ruijin Hospital under Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine.
New memorandums are expected to be signed during the event, further strengthening ties and collaboration between the two cities.
Established in 2010 and hosted alternately by Shanghai and Taipei, the forum has served as an important platform for dialogue to enhance cross-Strait connections. Over the past 15 sessions, the two cities have signed 47 memorandums on exchange and cooperation.
