Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's constant manipulation and provocation of political infighting goes against public opinion and has caused him to lose the people's support, said Zhang Han, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, on Wednesday.

Zhang made the statement at a press conference in Beijing in response to a media query regarding the approval of an impeachment motion against Lai.

The impeachment motion against Lai, submitted by lawmakers from the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP), was approved by the island's legislature on December 26, 2025. According to procedures, the legislature is expected to hold a vote on the impeachment on May 19, 2026.

"Lai Ching-te stubbornly clings to a separatist stance, pursuing his selfish political interests while disregarding the well-being of the people on the island. He has repeatedly undermined democracy, impeded freedom and abused judicial power to suppress and persecute political dissent. He has also arbitrarily resorted to a 'green terror' and created a 'chilling effect.' His constant manipulation and provocation of political infighting goes against public opinion and have caused him to lose the people's support, which will inevitably lead to strong opposition from the people of Taiwan," Zhang said.

The Lai Ching-te administration's bid to seek Taiwan secession by leaning on external forces is doomed to be crushed, a State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

Recently, Lai again preached his secessionist agenda when meeting with Japanese politicians who were visiting Taiwan.

Zhang Han, the spokeswoman, slammed Lai's actions as a sellout of Taiwan's interests at a press conference in Beijing.

"In exchange for external support for its separatist agenda, the Lai Ching-te administration is repeating the tired refrain of 'democracy versus authoritarianism,' while turning a blind eye to the danger of Japan's right-wing forces marching ever further down a militarist path. It is fawning on Tokyo without any principle, ignoring the plight of the island's high-tech sector being hollowed out at will by Western powers, and selling out Taiwan's interests in a no-holds-barred fashion. The Lai administration's scheme to rely on external forces to seek secession will be thoroughly crushed," she said.
