China's permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva said on Friday that matters concerning Iran should be determined by its own people, not by outside forces, during a special session held by the UN Human Rights Council to address the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran.
Jia Guide, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland, elaborated on China's position during the special session, stressing that China upholds the right of all countries to independently choose their own path of human rights development.
Jia outlined China's consistent stance on human rights, underscoring three key points of opposition.
"China's position on human rights issues is consistent and clear. We uphold the right of all countries to independently choose their own path of human rights development. We oppose interfering in other countries' internal affairs under the pretext of human rights, imposing country-specific human rights mechanisms without the consent of the country concerned, and applying double standards on human rights issues," said Jia.
"What is happening within Iran is essentially a domestic matter and should be independently determined by the Iranian people. China has always advocated the observance of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law. We oppose the use or threat of force in international relations, oppose imposing one's own will on other countries, and reject any return to the law of the jungle. The international community should, in line with respect for Iran's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, support the Iranian government and people in overcoming difficulties, maintaining national stability, and safeguarding their legitimate rights and interests. China hopes all parties will resolve differences through dialogue and is willing to play a constructive role in this regard," he said.
Recently, developments in Iran have attracted widespread attention. At the request of countries including Iceland, the UN Human Rights Council convened the special session.
