Devastating wildfires rage across parts of central, southern Chile

Wildfires have raged across parts of central and southern Chile, leaving homes destroyed and some people dead or injured.

The fires first broke out in the Nuble region and quickly spread southwards, reaching several communities in the Biobio region, which is one of the hardest-hit areas.

Strong winds and high temperatures caused some fires to rapidly approach urban areas, resulting in extensive damage to homes and casualties.

Many local residents said they've lost their homes to the wildfires.

"It's very painful because all my memories were here. I grew up in this home. So, it's been very hard to pick up the remains of my home and put them inside sacks, to put years of my personal history, my family's history, into sacks. So, while we've received a lot of help from my friends and family, it's very painful," said Kiara Concha, a local resident.

Volunteers said they are sparing no efforts to help.

"We come from Chepica, VI region. We brought 6,000 choripans (a type of sandwich) to hand out here, because it's not common to get things like this with such an enticing aroma. Yesterday I asked some friends who were around, and of course, they're always short on snacks. So I thought of bringing choripans, because everyone brings water and other things, but nobody brings choripans. And here you can see people crowding around, ordering choripan," said a volunteer.

Currently, emergency resettlement has been offered to people from affected areas.

Relevant departments are accelerating disaster assessment and follow-up resettlement work to provide support for the recovery and reconstruction of the disaster area.
