Russia will closely monitor the possibility of the United States deploying a missile defense system in Greenland, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday.
According to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Peskov emphasized the importance of Greenland to Russian security during an interview with Russian media. Speaking about the US Golden Dome missile defense system, he said Russia will undoubtedly closely monitor and analyze the United States' intentions.
Greenland, the world's largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over defense and foreign policy. The United States maintains a military base on the island.
Since returning to office in 2025, President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to "obtain" Greenland.
The US government has claimed that the island is crucial to US national security and has stated its intention to deploy the Golden Dome missile defense system there. Last May, Trump released the Golden Dome development plan, saying that the system could be integrated with existing US missile defense capabilities and, once fully operational, would be able to intercept missiles launched from other parts of the world and even from space.
Alexander Stepanov, a military expert at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, said earlier that the United States' desire to deploy the Golden Dome in Greenland is aimed at monitoring Arctic developments and acquiring the capability to intercept Russian hypersonic weapons.
