Major Sports Events Committee awards "M" Mark status to "World Grand Prix 2026"

The following is issued on behalf of the Major Sports Events Committee:

The Major Sports Events Committee (MSEC) has awarded "M" Mark status to the "World Grand Prix 2026" to be held from February 3 to 8 at the Kai Tak Arena.

The Chairman of the MSEC, Mr Wilfred Ng, said today (January 28), "The 'World Grand Prix' is only open to the top 32 ranked professional players in the world, of which its level of play and excitement are beyond doubt. Hence, it has once again been awarded with 'M' Mark status. The event not only provides snooker enthusiasts with the opportunity to appreciate the performances of world-class players closely, but also further promotes the development of snooker in Hong Kong."

The "M" Mark System aims to encourage and help local National Sports Associations and private or non-government organisations to organise more major international sports events and nurture them into sustainable undertakings. Sports events meeting the assessment criteria will be considered for "M" Mark status by the MSEC. Funding support will also be provided to some events. The "M" Mark System aims to promote the development of major sports events, cultivate a sustainable sporting culture, enhance Hong Kong's image as a centre for major international sports events and bring tangible economic benefits to the community.

Hong Kong Customs detects suspected case of illegal importing of animal

Hong Kong Customs yesterday (January 27) detected a suspected case of illegal importing of an animal at the Lo Wu Control Point. One suspected illegally imported cat with an estimated market value of about $20,000 was seized.

Customs officers yesterday intercepted an incoming 62-year-old male passenger at the Arrival Hall of the said Control Point. Upon examination, one cat was seized from his rucksack, and he was subsequently arrested.

The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.

Customs reminds the public that importing animals into Hong Kong without a valid permit is an offence.

Under the Rabies Regulation, any person found guilty of illegally importing animals, carcasses or animal products is liable to a maximum fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for one year.
