Latin America must take on a more proactive role in global governance to help ease tensions and strengthen cooperation, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin said in an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN).
His remarks came as President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Yamandu Orsi is on a seven-day state visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.
Lubetkin stressed that multilateralism should be rooted in respect for sovereignty, cooperation, and the reduction of tensions, principles he noted align closely with those outlined by President Xi.
"I believe that the concept of multilateralism is naturally fundamental, but I would say multilateralism needs a new direction, which I think is what President Xi was referring to when he spoke of developing global concepts. Because we, from Latin America, face a set of very intense, very important responsibilities in our first year of management, and it is due to our conviction that Latin America must play a different and much more powerful role in global affairs," said the minister.
The official urged cooperation grounded in respect and sovereignty, stressing the urgent need to ease global tensions.
"There cannot be cooperation in which one wins and the other loses. I refer to respect, I refer to sovereignty. These are all aspects that are permanently on our action agendas between the two countries, and beyond that, I refer to the multilateral system, for example within the United Nations. And in this world, so tense, so complicated, being presented with this type of dialogue, action, and affirmation of efforts towards greater tension reduction and enhanced cooperation is absolutely crucial if we want to have security in the future," he said.
