China, Uruguay issue joint statement on deepening comprehensive strategic partnership

China and Uruguay issued a joint statement on deepening the China-Uruguay comprehensive strategic partnership in Beijing on Tuesday.

The statement said that the relationship between China and Uruguay serves as a model of cooperation between countries with different land areas, population sizes and economic volumes. China and Uruguay enjoy a long-standing friendly relationship, respecting each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and understanding and supporting each other's core interests and major concerns.

Both sides reaffirmed their firm support for the international system with the United Nations (UN) at its core, and the World Trade Organization-centered multilateral trading system, the statement said.

The Uruguay side highly praises the Global Development Initiative (GDI) proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, and both sides will enhance practical cooperation within the framework of the GDI and contribute to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by actively participating in various activities of the Group of Friends of the GDI, according to the statement.

Uruguay reaffirms its appreciation for the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative proposed by China, the statement said.

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has agreed to hold nuclear talks with Iran on Friday in the Gulf state of Oman, according to U.S. news site Axios on Tuesday.

Currently, both sides are still consulting on whether to allow other Arab and Muslim countries in the region to join the discussions in Oman.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed on Tuesday that the Iranian side is discussing the location of the nuclear talks with the U.S..

In another development, Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, told Lebanese media on Monday that Iran could reduce the enrichment of uranium but would not transfer it abroad, reiterating the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program.

Shamkhani reaffirmed Iran's consistent position in previous talks that the country "does not seek nuclear weapons, will not seek a nuclear weapon and will never stockpile nuclear weapons, but the other side must pay a price in return for this."

He also mentioned that the quantity of enriched uranium in Iran is currently unclear, as some is buried under rubble [of nuclear facilities following U.S. airstrikes in June 2025], and has not been extracted due to the high risks involved.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday that he had instructed his top diplomat to “pursue fair and equitable" negotiations with the U.S.
