The 2026 Spring Festival Gala, China's most-watched annual television event, will air Monday night with a stage design that fuses cutting-edge technology and traditional aesthetics, featuring horse-inspired installations to symbolize strength and progress.

Falling on Tuesday this year, the Spring Festival, or the Chinese New Year, ushers in the Year of the Horse, the seventh animal in the Chinese zodiac. The Gala, themed "Galloping Steed, Onward Unstoppable," will present a diverse lineup of performances ranging from singing and dance to opera, martial arts, skits and magic. Its live broadcast on New Year's Eve has become a cherished tradition in hundreds of millions of homes.

The main stage features an artistic installation inspired by the horse, a cultural symbol of strength and ceaseless progress. The design aims to immerse viewers in an atmosphere of joy and prosperity, conveying the vitality of the Year of the Horse.

Visual Director Jiang Yuhao said the Gala's centerpiece stage installation is a programmable matrix, combining innovation with symbolism to capture the festive spirit and forward momentum of the new year.

"The technology department of the China Media Group developed the numerical control matrix device, which includes more than 300 modules and 5,584 individual flip panels, forming a powerful visual of eight galloping horses," Jian said.

"The stage design seeks to depict the scene of 10,000 horses charging forth in line with this year's theme: 'Galloping Steed, Onward Unstoppable.' The horse-themed installation is a numerical control matrix structure. It is designed with three different materials on its surfaces and features three colors -- gold, silver, and red. The numerical control matrix can undergo a flipping transformation. Combined with the lighting effect, it generates a myriad of color reflections. Throughout the entire performance, the stage structure, while flipping and moving, brings numerous and wondrous color changes," Guo Li, another visual director explained.

To amplify the immersive experience, this year's production incorporates advanced technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), AR (Augmented Reality), and XR (Extended Reality), creating a seamless fusion of physical and virtual worlds. These innovations enable performers to interact with dynamic digital environments, drawing audiences into a three-dimensional journey where reality and illusion blend in harmony.

African officials on Wednesday pledged to scale up investment to accelerate development across the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at a meeting in Accra, Ghana's capital.

They made the commitment during the 24th Annual General Meeting of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), where leaders highlighted the need to expand the bank's capital base to finance transformative projects.

Ghanaian Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson stressed that timely capital payments would strengthen EBID's leverage and sustain its growth, enabling the institution to stimulate inclusive economic expansion across the region.

"Timely capital payments are critical. It strengthens EBID leverage and sustains its growth and impact across our region. Expanding our capital base is essential to strengthen our ability to finance transformative development projects and stimulate inclusive economic growth among our member states," said Forson.

EBID recorded strong achievements in 2025, with total disbursements of about 722 million U.S. dollars, up 47.7 percent from 2024. Building on that momentum, President George Agyekum Donkor said the bank remains committed to helping member states tackle poverty and close infrastructure gaps across the region.

"We aim to direct at least 63 percent of new commitments towards the private enterprises to catalyze job creation and innovation. Simultaneously, the bank would embed environmental, social and governance principles across its operations, dedicating over 41 percent of resources to climate mitigation and social inclusion projects," said Donkor.

With disbursements surging nearly 48 percent last year, EBID officials said the bank is positioned to channel more resources into private-sector growth and climate-focused projects, reinforcing its role as a driver of inclusive development across West Africa.
