One person was killed and 20 others injured during Iran's latest round of strikes on Israel on Saturday night, Israel's national emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA) reported.

The Israeli military said Saturday night that it identified a new round of missiles launched from Iran.

Footage captured by China Central Television (CCTV) showed numerous trails left by missile fragments falling after interceptions could be seen in southern Jerusalem, with massive explosions from intercepted missiles echoing in the distant sky.

The United States and Israel on Saturday launched "major combat operations" against Iran, plunging the war-torn Middle East into a new round of violent conflicts.

Iran has retaliated with a series of counterattacks against Israel and U.S. targets across the region, with explosions reported in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia, among other countries.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in U.S.-Israeli attacks on Saturday morning, Iranian state media reported on Sunday.

The country has announced a 40-day mourning period after his death starting Sunday.

Khamenei was born in 1939 in Mashhad, northeastern Iran.

He served as Iran's president from 1981 to 1989 and had held the position of supreme leader since 1989.

In June 1981, Khamenei survived an assassination attempt that left his right arm paralyzed.
