Members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee said they have been highly encouraged and motivated by President Xi Jinping's remarks about the construction of a Healthy China at a joint group meeting during the fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC, the top political advisory body.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, joined Friday the panel discussion of CPPCC National Committee members from the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, the Jiusan Society, the sector of medicine and health, and the sector of welfare and social security.

Xi heard the opinions and suggestions of the political advisors, and stressed unswervingly following the path of health development with Chinese characteristics to ensure decisive progress in advancing the Healthy China Initiative during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030).

After the meeting, the political advisors said they will contribute to the cause of building a Healthy China by 2035 by aligning with national strategies, driving innovation, and fostering a people-centered approach to development. They pledged to broadly unite social efforts to safeguard people's lives and health, laying a solid foundation for building China into a strong nation and realizing national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization.

"The general secretary's speech, particularly his focus on 'Healthy China', embodies a profound sense of people-centered sentiment. It holds significant guiding importance to the future development of a healthy China. I feel greatly encouraged, profoundly enriched, and deeply grateful," said Ma Xiuzhen, a member of the CPPCC National Committee. "The core of my report is that the country should attach importance to and increase investment in common material technologies. In efforts to transform China from a big producer to a great powerhouse in materials, our fundamental and foundational technologies must be innovative," said member Lu Ke.

"As a member from the medical and health sector in the plateau region, I reported to the general secretary on our work in preventing and treating plateau diseases. The prevention and treatment effects have been very significant. The general secretary also fully affirmed this work. I have personally witnessed the tremendous changes that have taken place in Xizang," said member Pasang Drolma.

"The general secretary asked some questions about active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Overall, it is not only a field where high technologies converge, but also one that reflects China's comprehensive strength and high-quality economic development," said member Jiang Jiandong.

"For the 15th Five-Year Plan, the general secretary spoke about clear goals, tasks and requirements. Innovation is connected with the preceding industry on one end, and the people's livelihoods on the other. We need to further strengthen our technological innovation to solve the bottleneck problems," said member Ding Lieming.

"I do hope that I can take what the general secretary said back to my work, turn it into concrete regular actions, and implement them in practice. I want to transform his words into real-life scenarios in the future, and contribute our part to those real-life scenarios," said member Liu Qifang.

At the meeting, Xi extended festive greetings and best wishes to the country's women of all ethnic groups and from all walks of life ahead of the International Women's Day, which falls on March 8.

"In the year ahead, we hope that women will better play their role as 'half the sky' and make even greater contributions to getting the 15th Five-Year Plan off to a good start," Xi said.

This message resonated strongly with the female members, many of whom said they have been inspired to make even greater contributions in their respective fields.

"The International Women's Day is approaching. As a female member, I am particularly grateful to the Party and the government for their care for us women's work and for us female members. The general secretary mentioned the concept of 'Healthy China,' which reflects the Party's and the government's profound commitment to putting people first and prioritizing life. This greatly boosts our confidence," said member Liu Linlin. "The general secretary extended his greetings to women compatriots of all ethnic groups and sectors across the country. I felt very warm and excited upon hearing it. On such a political stage, we gathered with state leaders to discuss state affairs. Our country has now created a pretty equal environment for political participation and deliberation. I wish all women compatriots can demonstrate their unique charm on their career paths," said member Ma Xiuzhen.

China's commitment to its path of opening up will continue as a long-term national strategy and should increasingly be defined by inclusiveness, a national political advisor said Friday.

Zhou Hanmin, a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the 14th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and president of the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association, made the remarks in an interview with China Media Group (CMG) during the annual political "two sessions" underway in Beijing.

"Opening-up is and has been a long-term national policy and a strategy ever since China opened itself up (to the world) some 48 years ago. Ever since China joined WTO (World Trade Organization), you could see it has fundamentally changed the formats of economic movements. So opening-up is a reference and also a driving force," he said.

Zhou stressed China must also invite less privileged nations to share in the prosperity of a more open world.

"Inclusiveness is one word that should be used to modify China's opening-up. I (previously) submitted a bill in CPPCC for the zero tariff for those least developed nations' exportation to China. Because for each and every China International Import Expo, you can see quite a large number of exhibitors coming from the least developed countries. We need to give them very genuine help. We are just in the situation of that. We just try to do not only with developed nations, but the Global South and rest of the countries, all together," he said.

Zhou's comments come amid the ongoing "two sessions", the annual meetings of China's top legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), and the top political advisory body, the National Committee of the CPPCC. Both bodies serve a five-year term and hold a plenary session each year, generally in March.

The fourth session of the 14th NPC and the fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC kicked off in Beijing on Thursday and Wednesday, respectively. A main focus is the adoption of the country's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), a key blueprint guiding China's drive toward modernization.   When asked about key signals from the plan that the international community should closely watch, Zhou outlined several key issues.

"We are now carrying on this Five-Year Plan in the most crucial period of time. We are going to generally modernize the country (in) another 10 years. In this five-year period of time, we need to focus more on creation. Creation not necessarily in the field of technology. Creation means the modernization of the governance, create lots of new things in the system and methods of governance. This is also important," Zhou said.

"The modernization of industrial systems, the further expansion of the ability of consumption, and we try to know very well the longevity, whatever solves people's daily needs. The last but not least, we try to understand fully international collaboration. Opening-up is still a driving force," he said.
