China hopes that Afghanistan and Pakistan can exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialog, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian at a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

"Afghanistan and Pakistan are and will always be each other's neighbors. Dialog and negotiation are the only effective way to settle issues between them. China hopes that both sides will remain calm and exercise restraint, engage in face-to-face communication at an early date, achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible, and settle their differences through dialog," Lin said in response to a question about recent clashes between the two neighboring countries.

"China has urged both countries to ensure the safety and security of Chinese personnel, projects and institutions in their respective territories. China will continue to play a constructive role through its own channels to help de-escalate the situation and improve relations between the two countries," he said.
