The central government will take all necessary measures to punish in accordance with the law the Taiwan secessionist forces that split the nation and undermine ethnic unity, said Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

Chen made the statement in response to a media inquiry on the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, which was adopted as a fundamental law on ethnic affairs in China at the closing meeting of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) on March 12. It will take effect on July 1, 2026.

"All ethnic groups should be united and strive to achieve common prosperity, which is where the life, strength and hope of the Chinese nation lie. The formulation of the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law lays a solid legal foundation to foster a strong sense of the Chinese nation as one community and advance the building of this community. Compatriots across the Taiwan Strait share the same culture, ancestry, roots and origin, belong to the Chinese nation, and are a community of shared future that is bound by blood and share weal and woe," said Chen.

"We will fully implement the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, further deepen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, nurture the common interests of compatriots across the Strait, jointly promote Chinese culture, enhance the Taiwan compatriots' national, cultural and country identity, and join hands with them to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," he said.

"The DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) authorities deliberately misleads the public by fabricating so-called 'risks' in an attempt to intimidate the people in Taiwan and produce a chilling effect. We will take all necessary measures to punish in accordance with the law the acts of Taiwan secessionist forces that split the nation and undermine ethnic unity," said Chen.

"Taiwan secessionist forces have seriously undermined the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity and incited confrontation across the Strait. They are the utmost threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and will only render grave disaster to the compatriots in Taiwan. On the principled issue of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, our resolve is rock solid, and our stance remains consistent. We will never tolerate or connive at any form of Taiwan secessionist conducts. We have full confidence and strong capability to thwart any Taiwan secessionist attempts," said Chen.

"The more rampant the provocations by the Taiwan secessionists, the harsher our strikes. We sincerely hope that our fellow compatriots in Taiwan will clearly recognize the extreme danger and harm of Taiwan secessionists, work with us to resolutely combat Taiwan secessionist forces, take concrete actions to safeguard their own security and well-being as well as peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, so as to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations," said Chen.

An adorable giant panda cub has been seen enjoying a bowl of milk and later cosily lying on a wooden platform after getting a little muddy during messy playtime in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The playful panda, with its hair all wet and frizzy and covered in mud after presumably rolling around in its enclosure, is seen happily slurping on a bowl of milk provided by a panda keeper.

Later, the mischievous cub appears to be a little tired out from its exuberant activities, and is seen curled up having a rest on its wooden climbing frame.

Shared by the iPanda channel, this charming look into the life of panda cubs at the Wolong Shenshuping Base of China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) was filmed on February 28.

The adorable cub is one of a pigeon pair of cubs -- born in August 2025 at the CCRCGP -- to the giant panda Jia Mei.

The CCRCGP is a world-leading institution dedicated to the breeding and conservation of the giant panda. The center has established the world's largest captive population of giant pandas and pioneered research on captive breeding and training for rewilding.

The center also holds the largest global platform for promoting international cooperation and exchanges on Panda conservation, involving 18 zoos from 16 countries and regions, 39 domestic animal breeding institutions, and over 10 scientific research institutes.
