U.S. sci-fi film "Project Hail Mary", which will be released to Chinese audiences on Friday, conveys the power of communication and understanding to viewers, said German actress Sandra Huller, who plays a crucial role in this film.
While her name may not yet be a household one in China, Huller's works are quite familiar to many Chinese film enthusiasts through her powerful performance in the award-winning "Anatomy of a Fall".
In "Project Hail Mary", Huller takes on a role markedly different from those in her previous works. She portrays a mysterious yet commanding leader entrusted with a mission of monumental importance -- one that involves the fate of humanity.
The character, who must maintain absolute control in the face of an interstellar crisis, presented a fresh set of challenges and interests for the actress.
"None of us has experience with the scale of responsibility, I think I just tried to find somebody who I would want to be led by through this. I wanted to create somebody who has all the qualities that I expect from a good leader," Huller said in an online interview with China Media Group, reflecting on her approach to the role.
The film stars Ryan Gosling as a high school science teacher who is unexpectedly thrust into a desperate space mission to save the Earth.
This marks the first collaboration between Huller and Gosling. Despite the high-stakes tension their characters navigate on screen, Huller described the atmosphere on set as remarkably relaxed and enjoyable.
"Ryan is somebody who is a very approachable and relaxed colleague who knows what he's doing and he's doing it so well. It is just a pleasure just to watch him do it. We had an amazing time. I would do it anytime again," she said.
Beyond its star-studded cast and grand vision of space exploration, Huller believes the core of "Project Hail Mary" lies in its message about the power of communication and connection. She hopes audiences will resonate with the film's deeper themes.
"[It's a] big story that is so much about human connection and even not only human connection but also the connection between all beings in this world and in this universe, opening up and being in the state of mind where you want to find out and then you can do anything," said Huller.
