Eye-catching clothing featuring traditional motifs adorned with modern touches have been in the spotlight at the ongoing spring season of the 2026 China Fashion Week in Beijing, with designers putting a contemporary spin on some truly classic themes.

The spring edition of the biannual fashion week is being held in the Chinese capital from March 20 to 28, and has attracted more than 230 Chinese and international brands and over 400 designers showcasing their works.

At a specially-themed fashion show held from Tuesday to Wednesday, designers showcased their works that integrate both innovative patterns and traditional Chinese elements like the renowned Song brocade, a distinctive type of fabric developed during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), and the unmistakable woven shapes of jacquard patterns.

Nearly 100 men's and women's ready-to-wear designs were displayed at the show, which organizers say sought to create fusion of the past and the present.

"Inspired by thousands of years of craftsmanship and heritage, we integrate traditional patterns and weaving skills with modern designs and intelligent weaving, launching a series of fashion products that blend Chinese charm with contemporary trends," said Xu Derong, the art director of the Shengze Silk Textile Fashion Show.

The show also shone a light on more eco-friendly practices and designs, with sustainable materials being transformed into trendy fashionable pieces.

China's Ministry of National Defense on Thursday vowed stronger capabilities and more diverse means to strike secessionist forces in Taiwan and oppose external interference.

The remarks were made by Jiang Bin, a spokesperson for the ministry, at a regular press briefing when responding to a question about two new guided-missile destroyers, Dongguan and Anqing, which recently completed their first formation training and live-fire exercises after being commissioned.

Jiang said achieving China's complete reunification is a prevailing trend, a just cause and the will of the people, pledging that the military will continue to strengthen combat readiness.

"Secessionists advocating 'Taiwan independence' would only face a dead end if they resist reunification by force," he said.
