Iranians express anger, fear over US-Israeli strike on residential building

A missile strike hit a residential building in Rey, south of Tehran, in the early hours of Friday, leveling the structure and damaging surrounding homes, with civilian deaths and injuries reported.

The densely populated neighborhood was heavily affected, with the blast wave impacting four nearby alleys and leaving multiple buildings severely damaged.

Residents said the strike caused significant casualties, including newborns. Rescue operations were still underway at the time of reporting.

Local residents have expressed their anger and fear over the strike as the target is a residential building, not a military one.

"We were asleep when a loud explosion suddenly woke us at around 03:30. I rushed to wake my children and take them outside. The whole alley was filled with dust, and there was a strong smell of explosives. Everyone is out," a local resident said.

Following the attack, residents poured into the streets seeking safety, with many expressing fear and uncertainty.

"There was another huge, terrifying blast around 04:00 at the end of the valley. That was extremely frightening. We were asleep in front of TV, and the shock knocked over our TV and shattered the windows. The poor guys have been busy with rescue efforts since four in the morning. Everyone here is just an ordinary civilian. We are all the same here. We do not know if our homes will be next to be bombed, today or tomorrow. All the structures here are residential buildings. All the residents here are civilians," said a teenager.

Others voiced anger and confusion over the strike targeting a civilian area.

"My feeling is that, mother is still trembling like a leaf. I don't know what we did wrong to deserve this. We don't understand why it happened. At four in the morning, when everyone was asleep, we were jolted awake by the explosion. Why target ordinary people?" said another local resident.

Bilateral relations between China and Seychelles are entering a new phase of expansion, driven by rising trade volumes and growing collaboration in private sector, as well as emerging cooperation in the blue economy and digital innovation.

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng is paying a visit to Seychelles and two other African countries of Kenya and South Africa from March 22 to 30.

The year of 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Seychelles.

In 1976, Seychelles became a sovereign nation. China was among the first nations to officially recognize the archipelago country's independence from British rule, marking the beginning of a long friendship that has later transformed the small island state in the Indian Ocean.

"This 50th anniversary will allow us to take stock of what we have achieved in different fields, education, health, infrastructure, economy, culture, environment and other areas," Vincent Meriton, former vice president of Seychelles, said in an interview via video link.

In 2024, at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the relations between the two countries hit a new peak as the ties were officially elevated to a strategic partnership.

Available data showed that bilateral trade between the two countries has maintained a strong momentum, reaching 84 million U.S. dollars in 2024. China mainly exports high-tech products such as smart phones, high-end camera systems, and mechanical and electric products, among others. Seychelles primarily exports seafood.

The future development of the bilateral ties is now turning offshore as both nations are looking toward blue economy. They are working together on sustainable fisheries and protection for the very ocean that feeds Seychelles.
