China Media Group (CMG)'s 2026 "Glamorous Chinese", a global event staged to celebrate UN Chinese Language Day, saw activities combining culture, technology and entertainment hosted around the world.

April 20 marked the 17th UN Chinese Language Day and the 7th International Chinese Language Day.

The CMG event, which highlighted the technological empowerment of Chinese language learning and promoted Chinese culture overseas, brought together over 80 partners, including overseas Chinese language education institutions, mainstream overseas Chinese-language media, other media organizations, overseas online platforms, and the overseas operations of Chinese state-owned enterprises.

Programs and event videos related to the event were broadcast on various CMG platforms, mainstream Chinese media and on international Chinese education platforms, receiving nearly 30 million views to date.

During the event, CMG also launched media projects in Chinese and English, including a video podcast featuring international students experiencing traditional Chinese cultural activities with advanced, Chinese-developed robots, and an interview program with international students in China discussing how technology can help with Chinese language learning.

CMG also hosted a seminar where overseas Chinese journalists, representatives from Chinese language education institutions, and professionals from the overseas science and technology and culture fields shared their insights on the application of artificial intelligence in Chinese language learning.

Participants said that the event allowed overseas audiences to appreciate the beauty of the Chinese language and script with CMG's seamless integration of ideas, arts, and technology.

"Looking ahead, Chinese language education must combine efficiency and wisdom with emotional warmth," said Federico Masini, director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Rome La Sapienza.

"Happy UN Chinese Language Day to you all. Study hard and strive for excellence every day," said Constantin Holzer, lecturer of Asian Studies at University College in Cork, Ireland.

"Mastering Chinese can broaden one's worldview, and enrich oneself through learning its culture and engaging in cultural practices," said Aksenova Liudmila, director of Confucius Classroom at Ural State Pedagogical University.

"The Confucius Institute at Hanyang University in the Republic of Korea 'bridges mountains and seas, connecting you and me'," said Song Chang-keun, director of the Confucius Institute at Hanyang University.

Attendees also highlighted how learning Chinese was a passport to accessing frontier sci-tech knowledge, and also underlined the importance of learning and teaching Chinese using AI.

"Today, we are celebrating UN Chinese Language Day together. Chinese is the language of one of humanity's oldest civilizations, and at the same time, it now serves as a bridge to science and knowledge," said Patricio Conejero Ortiz, vice president of International Affairs at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).

"This year, we utilized artificial intelligence technologies. In the future, we hope to make greater use of technology to teach Chinese and to collaborate with teachers from China, including Shenzhen University," said Ibrahim Al Ghemlas, foreign director of the Confucius Institute at Prince Sultan University in Saudi Arabia.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he will extend the two-week ceasefire with Iran that was set to expire on Wednesday night (midnight GMT Tuesday).

"Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The U.S. president said he will "extend the ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other."

The U.S. military will continue the blockade against Iran and "remain ready and able," according to Trump.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said in a post on X Tuesday that the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports is "an act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire" and attacking Iranian merchant ships and detaining their crew members were even more serious violations.

"Iran knows how to neutralize restrictions, how to defend its interests, and how to resist bullying," Araghchi wrote in his post.

Mehdi Mohammadi, an advisor to Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, also said the U.S. blockade must be met with a military response, dismissing Trump's ceasefire extension announcement as "meaningless".

"Extending the ceasefire by Trump has no meaning. The losing side cannot dictate terms. Continuing the blockade is no different from bombing and must be met with a military response. Moreover, any extension of the ceasefire by Trump is certainly a way to buy time for a surprise attack. Now is the time for Iran to take the initiative," Mohammadi posted on X.
