National reunification is the only future for Taiwan and the key to the interests and wellbeing of Taiwan compatriots, said a Chinese mainland spokeswoman at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

Following Kuomintang Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun's return to Taiwan after a visit to the mainland, a recent poll in Taiwan showed that more than half of respondents believe Taiwan should proactively address and discuss the question of reunification and nearly 70 percent of the public supports strengthening cross-Strait contact and interaction to maintain peace and stability.

"Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun led a Kuomintang delegation on a visit to the mainland, responding to the mainstream public sentiment in Taiwan calling for peace, development, exchange, and cooperation. This aligns with the overarching trend of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait growing closer and coming together, and plays a significant role in promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and safeguarding the interests and well-being of the compatriots in Taiwan," said Zhang Han, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

"Reunification is Taiwan's only future and the key to the interests and wellbeing of our compatriots in Taiwan. Taiwan secession is a dead end that will only bring grave calamity to the Taiwan Strait. We hope that more compatriots in Taiwan will follow the historical trend, uphold the greater good of the nation, recognize the immense benefits of reunification, and actively participate in the just cause of promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and advancing the reunification of the motherland," she said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that the "Pentagon is lying" about the cost of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran launched on February 28.

In a post on X, Araghchi said that "Netanyahu's gamble has directly cost America 100 billion U.S. dollars so far, four times what is claimed."

"Indirect costs for U.S. taxpayers are far higher. Monthly bill for each American household is 500 U.S. dollars and rising fast," he added.

Citing three people familiar with the matter, CNN reported on Friday that the 25-billion-U.S.-dollar estimate "that a top Pentagon official gave to lawmakers on Wednesday for the total cost to date of the Iran war is a lowball figure," which "does not include the cost of repairing extensive damage suffered by U.S. bases in the region."

One source said the real cost estimate is closer to 40-50 billion U.S. dollars "when accounting for the costs of rebuilding U.S. military installations and replacing destroyed assets."
