As the 6th Asian Beach Games is unfolding in south China, host city Sanya has given foreign guests a true taste of its tropical resort charm, where duty-free shopping, sun-drenched beaches and distinctive activities turn their spare moments into mini vacations.
At the Sanya International Duty-Free City, global luxury brands and tax-free treasures offer visitors a wide range of shopping options.
The main venues of this year's Games stretch along the coastline of Sanya Bay. And when the day's races come to an end, the bay's many scenic spots would become must-visit destinations for athletes and officials who are keen on exploring the natural beauty.
Just several hundred meters from the Tianya Haijiao Venue Cluster lies Tianya Town, where azure waters meet soft sands, and a colorful array of beautiful hotels line the streets. Since the Games began, athletes and delegates from across Asia have been seizing every free moment to tour Sanya's attractions, immersing themselves in the city's irresistible coastal energy.
"It's a very vibrant city, very rich in culture. I love the atmosphere here. I love the food," said Abdulla Rafiu, Maldivian minister of youth empowerment, sports and fitness.
At the Athletes' Village Cultural Plaza, every evening brings a new theme of performances, ranging from traditional opera to modern dance and live music.
Another exhibition center featuring China's intangible cultural heritage workshop is drawing people interested in traditional craftsmanship. Inside, visitors try their hands at Li pottery, Li brocade weaving, and calligraphy, guided by local masters who have kept these ethnic traditions alive for generations.
"I really enjoy the exhibition center here in the athletes' village, which introduces to [us] the Chinese culture, these small things, which we can bring home as a memory," said Venera Abdulla, a member of the Olympic Council of Asia's Anti-Doping Commission.
Running from April 22 to 30, the 6th Asian Beach Games feature 14 sports, 15 disciplines and 62 events. It is the second time China has hosted the Games, after the 2012 edition in Haiyang, Shandong Province.
