Macao's tourism market saw a strong surge on Saturday, the second day of this year's five-day May Day holiday, with the Chinese special administrative region setting a new record for single-day tourist arrivals.
According to data released Sunday by Macao's Public Security Police Force, the number of arrivals through various checkpoints in Macao reached 247,700, setting a new record for the highest single-day inbound visitor volume in Macao.
During the holiday, visitors flocked not only to the city's iconic attractions, but also to leisure markets, cultural and museum exhibitions, and live performances, exploring the diverse facets of Macao.
"I came from Guangzhou today. The architecture, culture and food here are very diverse. I really like it here," said Xu Ziqing, a tourist from Guangdong Province.
First-time visitors were also impressed by Macao's hospitality.
"We've tried Macao for the first time, and we will be coming back again here. The people here are very courteous and friendly and a lot of them are so accommodating when we shop," said tourist Sharon Faye Concepcion.
Cheung Kin Chung, chairman of the Association of Macao Tourist Agents, said the record inbound tourist arrivals during the holiday highlighted several key trends in the region.
"First, the total number of visitors and the hotel occupancy rate have seen substantial growth, indicating a further enhancement of Macao's appeal as a tourism destination. Second, the increasing diversification of visitor demographics further showcases the charm of Macao as a world-class tourism and leisure center. Significant growth has been observed in key areas such as family travel, youth in-depth exploration and study tours, gastronomy, and cultural and historical discovery," said Cheung.
