China appreciates France's push to simplify the return of illicitly acquired cultural artifacts to their countries of origin, foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Thursday.

Lin made the statement at a press briefing in Beijing in response to media reports that the French National Assembly on Wednesday approved a draft law, aiming to establish a clearer and simpler legal framework for returning cultural assets acquired by France through illicit means.

The Lower House of the French Parliament passed the bill with 141 votes in favor and none against.

"China appreciates France's responsible attitude in facilitating the return of lost cultural relics to their countries of origin. We look forward to the bill completing its legislative process at an early date and to deepening cooperation with France in this field. China stands ready to work with all relevant parties, including France, to continue advancing the protection and repatriation of displaced cultural relics through dialogue and collaboration," said Lin.
