China will continue to back Venezuela in safeguarding its sovereignty, dignity and legitimate rights, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Thursday.
Lin made the remarks at a daily press briefing when answering a query about the situation in Venezuela. "Four months ago, the United States blatantly launched military strikes on Venezuela and forcibly took President Nicolas Maduro and his wife into custody. Such hegemonic acts of the United States seriously violate international law and Venezuela's sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region. China firmly opposes it. China, as always, supports Venezuela in safeguarding its sovereignty, dignity and lawful rights," said Lin.
On Jan 3, U.S. military forces launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela and forcibly seized Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, before transporting them to New York. Now they are still in custody in New York.
The incident has triggered protects in Venezuela, where people repeatedly took to the streets, demanding the United States to release the Venezuelan leaders.
