More than 10 million trips by Hong Kong and Macao single-plate vehicles passed through the Zhuhai highway port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge since the "Macao Vehicles Going North" and "Hong Kong Vehicles Going North" policies launched in 2023, according to data from the border inspection station, with the milestone reached as of Monday.
The policy for Macao vehicles took effect on January 1, 2023. After completing a simple application and receiving border inspection approval, Macao SAR vehicle owners can drive their private cars into Guangdong via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge's Zhuhai highway port.
The same policy was implemented for car owners in Hong Kong on July 1, 2023, greatly facilitating travel between Guangdong and both special administrative regions.
Customs statistics show that as of Monday, over 228,000 drivers have completed registration under these policies, with more than 192,000 vehicles filed.
Data from the border inspection station shows that in 2025, trips by Hong Kong and Macao single-plate vehicles processed at the port totaled 3.8 million, or 2.7 times the 2023 volume, representing an average annual growth rate exceeding 60 percent.
Rising demand for cross-border self-driving has increased pressure on clearance efficiency.
At the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge's Zhuhai highway port, after vehicle inspection, drivers of Hong Kong and Macao single-plate vehicles need only swipe their documents, provide fingerprints, and undergo facial recognition verification. The entire process takes about one minute on average.
