The U.S. dollar strengthened in late trading on Tuesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, gained 0.02 percent to 99.219 at 15:00 (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro was down to 1.1628 dollars from 1.1631 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound rose to 1.3469 dollars from 1.3458 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 159.91 Japanese yen, higher than 159.76 Japanese yen in the previous session. The U.S. dollar added to 0.7873 Swiss francs from 0.7864 Swiss francs, and it decreased to 1.3832 Canadian dollars from 1.3842 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar climbed to 9.3155 Swedish kronor from 9.3059 Swedish kronor.

European stocks closed higher across the board on Tuesday, driven by strength in the technology sector after global semiconductor firm STMicroelectronics raised its earnings outlook.

The United Kingdom's FTSE 100 index rose 0.33 percent to 10,373.51 points. France's CAC 40 index gained 0.77 percent to finish at 8,209.09 points. Germany's DAX index advanced 0.48 percent to end the session at 25,124.17 points.
