U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed displeasure with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's military operations in Lebanon, even as both leaders affirmed their alignment on core issues, including Iran's nuclear program and Hezbollah's disarmament.
In an interview on Wednesday, Trump said he wasn't angry but was a little perturbed that Netanyahu was constantly fighting with Lebanon, though he stressed they maintain a solid relationship and work smoothly together.
Earlier on Monday, U.S. media reported that Trump had called Netanyahu "crazy" in a phone conversation and accused him of ingratitude, claiming he had helped the Israeli leader avoid imprisonment in his corruption trial.
In a separate interview on Wednesday, Netanyahu said he and Trump see eye to eye on the major issues concerning Iran. He acknowledged occasional "tactical disagreements" with the U.S. administration but noted that both sides are able to resolve them properly and remain aligned on their "core goals."
He also said that he and Trump speak by phone "every two days," sharing common objectives that include preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and ensuring Israel's security. In addition, both are committed to disarming Lebanon's Hezbollah and achieving the demilitarization of Lebanon, he said.
On the war with Iran, Netanyahu said how it ends "remains an open question," but Israel will continue to safeguard its security interests. Regarding Iran's attack on Kuwait, he warned that Iran is "playing with fire" and is aware of Trump's stated readiness to resume full military action if necessary.
Asked whether the ceasefire remains in effect following recent Iranian attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain, Netanyahu said it "entirely depends on Trump's decision," adding that both Israel and the U.S. are prepared, and Iran should recognize that.
Meanwhile, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said on Wednesday during a visit to the Haifa naval base that "there is no ceasefire" in Lebanon and that the military is ready to resume fighting against Iran at any moment.
He noted that the navy is becoming another long-range strategic arm of the IDF, and all branches are prepared for renewed combat.
