Africa CDC warns Ebola outbreak could severely worsen

The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) could become the worst in recent years, the head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) warned on Tuesday.

Addressing a high-level virtual meeting in Burundi on Ebola response, Jean Kaseya, director-general of the Africa CDC, stressed the seriousness of the current situation, calling for swift action to stop the outbreak.

African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf also called on member states and international partners to strengthen collaboration to jointly curb the further spread of the epidemic.

The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the DRC has risen to 837, including 196 deaths, according to data released by the country's health ministry on Tuesday.

The 32nd Beijing International Book Fair opened on Wednesday at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, bringing together more than 1,700 exhibitors from 82 countries and regions.

The fair, held under the theme "Books as a Bridge for Dialogue, Exchange and Win-Win Cooperation," spans 60,000 square meters and features 220,000 titles across exhibition areas for domestic, overseas and online publishing. The United Arab Emirates is serving as the guest of honor at the event.

More than 20 countries, including Russia, France, Germany and Italy, have set up national pavilions, while 30 major international publishing institutions are taking part in the fair.

The online publishing section highlights online literature, games and animation, showcasing the latest achievements in emerging forms of popular literature and art.
