China's first next-generation flexible display production line began mass production on Wednesday in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, set to deliver thinner, cheaper displays to laptops and tablets worldwide.

Operating one of the world's first Gen-8.6 production lines of AMOLED, a flexible display panel primarily used in the screens of smart terminals such as laptops and tablets, the BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. mainly targets medium-sized premium display panels for laptops and tablets.

With a total investment of 63 billion yuan (over 9 billion U.S. dollars), this project is the largest single industrial project in China's display industry in terms of investment volume.

"This production line is designed to produce 32,000 glass substrates per month. We have established a highly efficient solution that includes strict quality control, intelligent logistics, and intelligent capacity allocation. At the same time, we have actively collaborated with upstream and downstream partners to build a stable supply chain system," said Yu Xiangnan, senior vice president of BOE.

Screens produced using the new process consume 20 percent to 30 percent less power and have a lifespan extended by 3 to 4 times, significantly accelerating the large-scale adoption of high-end display panels in IT equipment, which marks a giant leap for China in the industry, according to experts.

"Previously, in LCD displays, we went from following to leading, but we were not the number one in technology. The mass production of 8.6-generation AMOLED represents a major milestone for China's display industry, a development from competing in the track to defining the track," said Ouyang Zhongcan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).

The central parity rate of the Chinese currency renminbi, or the yuan, weakened 34 pips to 6.8130 against the U.S. dollar Wednesday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System.

In China's spot foreign exchange market, the yuan is allowed to rise or fall by 2 percent from the central parity rate each trading day.

The central parity rate of the yuan against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of prices offered by market makers before the opening of the interbank market each business day.
