Monterrey, a host city in Mexico for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has deployed Chinese-developed robot dogs with advanced crowd-patrolling technology to help police secure the area around the stadium.

Security is tight around the Monterrey Stadium, where robot dogs have joined the police force as fans arrive.

"I feel that we are advancing technologically here. Seeing these robots gives me more confidence that I am safer wherever I go," said Elias Jarman, a Mexican football fan.

The robot dog unit, called K9-X, can scan crowds, stream video, and enter dangerous areas in place of human officers. Local police say the robot dogs are making their World Cup debut and are intended for long-term use, as part of ongoing investment in security modernization.

Bought from Chinese humanoid robot maker Unitree Robotics for about 36,000 U.S. dollars each, the robot dogs are among the latest technological innovations to reach Mexico from across the Pacific.

"China has always had cutting edge technology, and robots today do amazing things, so we're proud that Mexico is adopting this technology," said Javier Gonzalez, another Mexican football fan.

Training a traditional K9 unit takes years, yet officers can master these robot dogs in just two weeks.
