SCED promotes Hong Kong's unique advantages as platform for Mainland enterprises to go global in Shanghai
The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Algernon Yau, today (June 29) attended a seminar entitled Hong Kong - Powering East China's Innovation and Technology Enterprises to Go Global during his duty visit to Shanghai. The seminar organised by the Task Force on Supporting Mainland Enterprises in Going Global (GoGlobal Task Force) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government aimed to promote Hong Kong's business advantages and encourage Mainland enterprises, including innovation and technology companies in East China, to pursue overseas expansion strategies through Hong Kong as a platform. Vice Mayor of Shanghai Mr He Qing also attended the seminar and delivered remarks.
In recent years, the outbound strategies of Mainland enterprises have evolved from "single-market expansion" to "multi-corridor growth". As the world's freest economy, Hong Kong serves as a critical link between Mainland enterprises and emerging markets. With a robust combination of financial capital, innovation ecosystems, intellectual property protection and high-end global talent, Hong Kong provides comprehensive and multidimensional support for Mainland enterprises to go global. Coupled with the city's international professional services, Hong Kong serves as a vital accelerator for the overseas expansion of Mainland enterprises.
Speaking at the seminar, Mr Yau said that Shanghai has long been at the forefront of the country's reform and opening up, while Hong Kong and Shanghai share deep-rooted ties and maintain close co-operation. As a "super connector" and a "super value-adder", Hong Kong is well positioned to help Mainland enterprises efficiently connect with international markets, pool global capital, and expand their businesses worldwide.
Mr Yau noted that since its establishment at the end of last year, the GoGlobal Task Force under his leadership has been providing one-stop, comprehensive support services for enterprises through a three-step approach: "bringing in", getting ready for going global and "going global". This initiative helps Mainland enterprises expand overseas via Hong Kong and tap into the new opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative.
At the same time, the HKSAR Government is accelerating the development of multiple innovation and technology projects in the Northern Metropolis and formulating a package of preferential policies to attract high-value-added industries and enterprises to set up in Hong Kong. Together with Hong Kong's strengths as an international financial centre, these efforts provide an ideal platform and springboard for East China's innovation and technology enterprises to go global. Mr Yau said he looked forward to deepening collaboration between Shanghai and Hong Kong, and co-operating closely to venture overseas to achieve mutual benefits.
The seminar is a large-scale promotional event organised by the Go Global Task Force in East China, cohosted by Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK), the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai of the HKSAR Government, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government.
At the seminar, a representative from a Mainland financial institution elaborated on Hong Kong's functions and advantages as an ideal financing platform, while a representative from a Shanghai-based innovation and technology enterprise shared its successful experience of going global via Hong Kong. During a panel discussion moderated by InvestHK, representatives from the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Productivity Council introduced service platforms available to Mainland enterprises seeking to go global. Hong Kong professional service providers also shared how they leverage their expertise in venture capital financing, taxation, and accounting to help East China enterprises better expand into overseas markets.
Earlier in the day, Mr Yau met with the Chairman of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Limited, Mr He Dongfeng, to gain a deeper understanding of the latest developments in the Mainland's aviation industry and exchange views on industrial co-operation and market expansion.Mr Yau also attended a dinner in celebration of the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai of the HKSAR Government. He had exchanges with government officials and business leaders of Shanghai at the dinner to deepen ties between Hong Kong and Shanghai.
Mr Yau will return to Hong Kong tomorrow (June 30).
