U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday insisted that Iranian and U.S. officials will meet Tuesday in Qatar, at Tehran's request while Iran said no plan for any talks with the United States in coming days.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared that "Iran has requested a meeting" which "will take place tomorrow in Doha."
Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday that U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will travel to Qatar for high-level talks with Iran this week.
She added that discussions on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on June 18 between the United States and Iran would continue, with "technical talks" running in parallel.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said later on Monday no meetings with the United States are scheduled in the coming days, adding that Iran's delegation will visit Qatar to focus on implementing the memorandum of understanding rather than holding talks with U.S. officials.
Earlier in the day, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi told the country's official IRNA news agency that technical talks between the working groups of Iran and the United States were not scheduled for this week.
However, Gharibabadi, who heads Iran's delegation in the technical negotiations, said consultations were continuing with Qatar on relevant issues, including pursuing the U.S. fulfillment of obligations under the peace MoU.
The first round of technical talks within the framework of the designated working groups will be held after the necessary conditions are met and following agreement on the date and venue, and consultations on these matters are continuing through the mediator countries, Gharibabadi said.
On June 22, the technical negotiations between Iran and the United States began in Switzerland following high-level consultations between Iranian and U.S. delegations the previous day with the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar.
